Using the entire roster in an Ordinal Bin and selecting names without dragging

Hello,

I am preparing a complete-network study in schools and testing Network Canvas in the browser. I have two questions:

  1. Can I automatically include the entire roster in an Ordinal Bin?
Currently, I can add a roster through the Name Generator for Roster Data, but only the people selected there appear in the subsequent Ordinal Bin. I would like participants to rate everyone on the roster, excluding themselves, without first having to select or drag every person into the interview. Is there a setting or workaround that would populate the Ordinal Bin with all roster members automatically?

  2. Can participants click or tap instead of dragging names?
Is there a way to add people from the roster by clicking their names? Similarly, in the Ordinal Bin, could participants click a person and then click the appropriate category instead of dragging them?

I would appreciate any suggestions for making these tasks easier for students.

Thank you for your help!

Hi! Welcome to the community forum :waving_hand:

I’m afraid not, no. This question has been asked previously, and the only workaround we can offer is that you have a researcher-driven stage at the start of the interview where you manually add all nodes from a roster.

We are working on a “whole network mode” but it hasn’t been implemented yet. I’ll note that you wanted to use it, and see if we can bump it up the priority list.

Unfortunately not with the current designs. Both screens work with keyboard shortcuts, but this is more useful for disabled participants.

I think this is a great suggestion for a feature and I will add it to the backlog. It would be something that you could implement yourself if you are so inclined (it could likely also be implemented by an LLM). I would be happy to advise where to start looking at the code.

Sorry to not have been able to be more useful!

Thanks a lot for your response and for the great work you do here! We expect to begin using the tool in approximately 4-6 months. If the roster could function as a network itself—so that all approximately 100 roster members are automatically included without having to add them manually—we would be very happy to use Network Canvas for our study.

The option to select participants by clicking or tapping rather than dragging would also be extremely helpful. Thank you for adding these requests to the backlog and considering whether the whole-network mode could be prioritized!

I definitely hear what you are saying, and I would love to find a way to get your study to be able to use the software. It is a tricky one, because there are also quite a few researchers who wanted to have the roster nomination approach instead, but I agree that we need to support both.

I am going to try to get the “whole network mode” I mentioned implemented in the next few weeks. The way this will work is that you will be able to select a roster that is automatically added to the interview network at the start of the interview (all nodes - and maybe edges?). This will effectively function like “pre seeding” the network with a given roster. Please let me know if you have any specific input into this functionality.

I’ll try to reply here once it has been implemented. Unfortunately I can’t give you a specific timeline, but I’ll do my best to be quick.

I also added design specifications for the “click to assign” functionality in the ordinal and categorical bin interfaces.

This is fantastic! Thanks so much for your work. I will check in a few weeks! In the meanwhile please let me know if you need any unput on this. What you descried I think would be perfect!
